In 2009 liraglutide was approved for medical use in the European Union, and in 2010 in the United States. It was the 142nd most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 4 million prescriptions in 2019.

Weight loss management is a major concern in diabetic patients but a proper healthy diet and a good lifestyle can work miracles sometimes. Liraglutide has already shown good results in weight loss. So, it can be used for obesity medication under the direction of a physician.
