What is Liraglutide?

Liraglutide is a medication for diabetic patients with type 2 diabetes. It is an injection that is given to patients. It also treats obesity and helps in weight loss management. But all the treatment should be done under the supervision of an expert physician. It is given under the skin carefully.

In 2009 liraglutide was approved for medical use in the European Union, and in 2010 in the United States. It was the 142nd most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 4 million prescriptions in 2019.

Liraglutide Treatment in Diabetes

Though liraglutide improves blood glucose, it is not preferred, like any other drug in diabetes because it has shown some significant concerns which we will discuss ahead.

We at Specialty Care Clinic provide full services to patients with type 2 diabetes and carefully track each and every step. Liraglutide medication is given under the supervision of our best physician and monitored for any possible side effects that can occur.

Due to less preference in the treatment, it is used only when metformin and other agents like sulfonylurea are not sufficient. In a Cochrane review in 2011, a 0.24% reduction of Hb1Ac was seen with 1.8mg liraglutide which is more than insulin glargine and 0.33% more than exenatide (10µg twice daily), sitagliptin, and rosiglitazone.

Liraglutide dosages are given under the supervision of a physician or doctor. All the medication is based on the patient’s medical condition. The medication starts from a small dosage to prevent abdominal side effects and then gradually increases the dosage. If a patient has skipped 3 days after the last dosage they have to reschedule their whole treatment and start from the initial dose to avoid any side effects. It is mandatory to follow the doctor’s advice carefully.

Liraglutide works by increasing intracellular cyclic AMP (cAMP) which releases insulin if glucose concentration got elevated. The released insulin decreases the glucose and approaches euglycemia.
