Frovatriptan (Frova)- Dosage, Uses, and Side Effects

Migraines can be treated with frovatriptan. It relieves pain and other symptoms of headaches- nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light. The drug Frovatriptan (Frova) belongs to the triptan class of medicine.

It works by activating serotonin receptors in your brain and nervous system, which are produced by your body. Migraine occurs when blood vessels widen which causes too much blood flow into the brain and when specific sensory molecules are released into the nervous system. Frovatriptan tightens the blood vessels in the brain and prevents the release of sensory chemicals by acting on serotonin receptors, which relieves migraine. Frovatriptan does not prevent future migraines or reduce the frequency of migraine attacks.

Frovatriptan should not be used to treat a tension headache or a headache that makes one side of your body immobile. Use Frovatriptan only if a medical professional has identified your symptoms as migraine headaches.

Frovatriptan's half-life is five times longer than that of other triptans, making it unique. As a result, frovatriptan can be used for both long-term or recurring migraine as well as for mini-prophylaxis, including migraines associated with menstruation and other conditions.

Studies show that Frovatriptan has the lowest headache recurrence rate for moderate to severe migraines.

Many diseases have the same symptoms, it is best to consult a doctor first before taking any medication. Specialty Care Clinics have a team of qualified doctors who will help you with your medication.

Mechanism of Action

A 5-HT receptor agonist with a strong affinity for 5-HT1B and 5-HT1D receptors is frovatriptan. Frovatriptan does not significantly affect the activity of GABAA-mediated channels or bind to benzodiazepine binding sites.

It's believed that frovatriptan works on extracranial and intracranial arteries to prevent excessive vein enlargement during a migraine.

How to use Frovatriptan?

Take this medication orally at the first symptom of migraine and as directed by a doctor. You may receive the first dose of Frovatriptan at the hospital to monitor its adverse effect.

If your symptoms improve but return, take a second dose after 2 hours. Take no more than three doses in a 24-hour period.

  •    You can take Frovatriptan up to 9 days a month. Overusing migraine medication may worsen your headache. If you have more than four headaches in a month, inform your doctor.
  •    At first, Frovatriptan makes you dizzy or tired. Until you are certain of how the drug affects you, avoid driving or engaging in any activity that requires concentration.
  •    Frovatriptan doesn’t have a daily dosing schedule, it is used when required.
  •    Do not use Frovatriptan for headaches other than migraine.
  •    Keep track of your blood pressure. Fronatriptan can cause a rise in blood pressure.
