Mechanism of action of Sumatriptan (Alsuma)

Three distinct medical actions have been implicated in the antimigraine effect of Sumatriptan (Alsuma):

  •    Sumatriptan (Alsuma) stimulates the presynaptic 5-HT1D receptors, which serves to stop both dural vasodilation and inflammation.
  •    Sumatriptan (Alsuma) directly inhibits the trigeminal nuclei cell excitability via 5-HT1B/1D receptor agonism in the brainstem.
  •    Vascular 5-HT1B receptor agonism results in vasoconstriction of meningeal, dural, cerebral, or pial vessels.

Sumatriptan (Alsuma) comes is in a class of migraine medicine called selective serotonin receptor agonists. Alsuma basically works by narrowing the blood vessels in the head, stopping the pain signals from being sent to the brain via blood vessels, and blocking the release of certain substances that cause pain, nausea, and other symptoms of migraine and headache.
