What are the Uses and Side Effects of Zolmitriptan (Zomig)?

What is Zolmitriptan (Zomig)?

Zolmitriptan(Zomig) is a medicine used to treat headaches. This medicine narrows the blood vessels around the brain. Zolmitriptan also reduces the elements in the body that can trigger head pain, sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, and other migraine symptoms.

Zolmitriptan is mostly used to treat migraine in adults.

Zolmitriptan(Zomig) can treat a headache only that has already begun. It is not able to prevent headaches or can not reduce the number of attacks.

Zolmitriptan should not remove a common tension headache, a headache that causes loss of movement on one side of the body, or any other headache that is different from usual migraine headaches. This medication can be used only if the condition has been confirmed by a doctor as migraine headaches.

How does zolmitriptan (Zomig) work?

Zolmitriptan (Zomig) is a medicine of triptan group. The medicine works on receptors in the brain and nervous system that respond to serotonin(also called monoamine), a natural chemical in the body. Migraine headaches happen when too much blood gets into the brain through widened blood vessels and some sensory chemicals are released into the nervous system. By responding to serotonin receptors, zolmitriptan (Zomig) helps in tightens the blood vessels in the brain and stops the release of pain-causing chemicals. This helps relieve migraine headaches.
