What is Mounjaro (Trizaptide)?

Mounjaro is an injectable prescription medication used to control blood sugar levels in adults with Type 2 diabetes. Although, it is still not proven that it can be used to treat patients with pancreas inflammation (Pancreatitis).

  •    Mounjaro is a type of medicine that activates both GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) as well as GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonists.
  •    GIP helps in decreasing the food intake or slowing the digestion process and increases the energy distribution which ultimately helps in weight loss whereas when it is mixed with GLP-1 receptor agonists provides a much more efficient result in control of blood glucose and weight loss.
  •    It can not be used for patients who have Type 1 diabetes.
  •    The recipients of this medicine should be adults.

FDA (Food and Drug Administration) Approval

Recently, in late June or early May U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Mounjaro medication for adults with type 2 diabetes.

It is said by Patrick Archdeacon, M.D. associate director of the Division of Diabetes, Lipid Disorders and Obesity in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research that in the given challenge many patients achieved their goal which is controlled blood sugar levels.

It turned out to be a very important milestone in the treatment of type 2 diabetes which was earlier very difficult to control with so many other complexities.

When will Mounjaro be available?

It is made available to patients in six doses

  •    2.5 mg
  •    5 mg
  •    7.5 mg
  •    10 mg
  •    12.5 mg
  •    15 mg

Recommended maximum dose (15mg) for patients to reduce the hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level (a measure of blood sugar control) is more effective as compared to other medication systems.

A1c is a type 1, type 2 diabetes diagnosis test.

How does Mounjaro help in Weight loss?

Various experiments were performed to find out whether Mounjaro put the results or not and surprisingly Mounjaro did help in weight loss, with a minimum dose of 5mg it showed an 11.9% weight loss reduction from baseline.

Currently, it is approved by FDA to use only in the treatment of diabetes, not in the weight loss process but the result shows it can be helpful in weight loss too.

Mechanism of Action of Mounjaro

Mounjaro works by activating GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonists which automatically improves blood sugar control.

As per dose, Mounjaro comes in a pen-like structure with a hidden niddle that is given to the patient once a week.

However, there are some serious concerns about the mechanism of Mounjaro's medication.

It comes also comes with a severe warning:

So, one should consult a doctor before starting any procedure and it is also required to know about the full family’s medical history.

What is Mounjaro’s cost?

The lowest GoodRx price for the most common version of Mounjaro is around $954.70, 18% off the average retail price of $1,168.15.

Patients must have commercial drug insurance coverage for Mounjaro.

In Mounjaro there are two kinds of ingredients:

Active ingredient: It includes only tripeptide

Inactive ingredients: This contains sodium chloride, sodium phosphate dibasic heptahydrate, and water for injection. To adjust the pH hydrochloric acid solution and/or sodium hydroxide solution may have been added.
