Rizatriptan (Maxalt)- Uses And Side Effects

What is Rizatriptan (Maxalt)?

Rizatriptan (Maxalt) is a kind of headache medicine that is used to treat migraine. Rizatriptan (Maxalt) narrows the blood vessels of the brain. Rizatriptan (Maxalt) also helps in reducing substances in the body that can trigger headache sensitivity to light, pain, nausea, sound, and other migraine symptoms.

Rizatriptan (Maxalt) is serotonin (a neurotransmitter) (5-HT) 1B/1D receptor agonist (triptan) indicated for the treatment of acute migraine with or without aura in adults and in pediatric patients, 6 to 17 years of age.

Rizatriptan (Maxalt) should not remove a common tension headache, a headache that causes loss of movement on one side of the body, or any other headache that is different from usual migraine headaches. This medication can be used only if the condition has been confirmed by a doctor as migraine headaches.

Mechanism of action of Rizatriptan (Maxalt)

Three distinct medical actions have been implicated in the antimigraine effect of the Rizatriptan (Maxalt):

  •    Rizatriptan (Maxalt) stimulates the presynaptic 5-HT1D receptors, which serves to stop both dural vasodilation and inflammation.
  •    Rizatriptan (Maxalt) directly inhibits the trigeminal nuclei cell excitability via 5-HT1B/1D receptor agonism in the brainstem.
  •    Vascular 5-HT1B receptor agonism results in vasoconstriction of meningeal, dural, cerebral, or pial vessels.
  • Rizatriptan (Maxalt) works by narrowing blood vessels in the brain, stopping pain signals from being sent to the brain via blood vessels, and blocking the release of certain natural substances that cause pain, and other symptoms of migraine. Rizatriptan is not able to prevent migraine attacks or can not reduce the number of headaches.

Some of the positive highlights of Rizatriptan (Maxalt)

    •    Rizatriptan (Maxalt) can relieve migraine headaches quickly.
    •    People don't need to drink water with the dissolvable tablet of Rizatriptan (Maxalt) for it to work, so this could be a good medication for people who can't keep water down or have problems swallowing when suffering from migraine.
    •    Rizatriptan (Maxalt) can be used by children ages 6-17 years old.
    •    Rizatriptan (Maxalt) is available as a lower-cost generic.
